It was moved and seconded by Darlene and Trevor to accept the financial report as amended.  (See page 1 “peersonal changed to personal”).   Motion carried.

Different options for solving our financial situation were discussed:

  • Executive committee will review the budget and report back to Vestry.

  • A special vestry meeting will be held on Sept. 3 to encourage evangelism and church growth.  The congregation will be invited to attend.

Outreach:

Nancy Ghali shared the three objectives of the outreach committee.  (See attached).  Do we wish to give larger amounts of money to a small number of organizations or to give small amounts of money to several different organizations.  Nancy reported on several local organizations she has researched and stated her opinion in favor of supporting them.  It was agreed that “hands on” is the most desirable when supporting any group.  The discussion developed into the philosophical basis of outreach or community ministries, as this relates to our stated mission.   Kevin and Nancy will reflect on what was discussed and report back to Vestry.

Evangelism:

Curry Miles presented the Alpha Program.  He stated that Alpha is spiritually led from start to finish.  Alpha is outreach and evangelism at its best.  Alpha with love, commitment and vision is an opportunity for each of us to go deeper in our own faith journey by:

  • Reviewing our understanding of who Jesus Christ is.

  • Reviewing our faith decision and be able to express to others what and why our faith in Christ is.  (See attached)

Trevor reported on the Wednesday night Bible Class.  We are studying Out of the Salt Shaker and into the World, evangelism as a way of life, by Rebecca Manley Pippert.

Bob Wagner gave a detailed review of the Salt Shaker study schedule and John Stott’s five key terms on evangelism.

Small Groups – David:

David reported on the four small groups that are being developed.  They will be held in four different homes throughout the county—Ghali, Howard-Snyder, Swieringa and Baines.  Each group will have a different focus.  Members of the congregation are encouraged to sign up to attend one of the groups.

Access to services – Cavin:

Retirement centers must be contacted to do a needs assessment to determine whether it is advantageous to bring people to us or to go to them.

Clergy Report – Fr. Kevin:

Kevin shared a draft of the new service book and the new directory for St. Brendan’s.

The youth group has moved from St. Paul’s Academy over to the SDA church.

Fr. Tom Herrick and Jenni Bartling will be coming to the Pacific NW to train coaches/mentors in Vancouver, BC on October 20 and 21.  This is in response to the concern to grow already existing smaller parishes.  See Rector’s Report for August 2009.

Gerry reported on the recent Leadership Conference Seminar sponsored by the Willow Creek Association that he and Peg attended.

Committee Reports:

Children’s Ministries – Darlene:  Childcare is the single most important element for bringing young families to church.  If we advertise that we provide childcare it means that we are providing certified sitters.  It was moved and seconded by Cavin and Darlene that Kevin advertise at WWU for sitters to provide childcare during the service.  Motion carried.

Other Business – David:

A change in service time was brought up for discussion again.  It was the consensus of  Vestry to move the service to a later time.  The congregation will be encouraged to give input.

David and Maddie would like to start up a Reader’s Theatre performance of “Blythe Spirit” by Noel Coward.  It would be open to the community for a small charge.  It will be necessary to explore a site.

Closing Prayer was led by Kevin.

Respectfully submitted,

Susan Hess

Vestry Clerk
